SCREENING | A Long Way from Home @ Coral Gables Art Cinema
Jun 27 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Join us for the FREE screening at Coral Gables Art Cinema on Tuesday, June 27

6 p.m. Reception
7 p.m. Screening followed by a Q&A with Gaspar González (Director), Matthew Frye Jacobson (Writer) and special guests to be announced.

Directed by award-winning documentary filmmaker Gaspar González, A Long Way from Home: The Untold Story of Baseball’s Desegregation chronicles the struggles and triumphs of the pioneering black and Latino players who followed Jackie Robinson into white professional baseball, often playing minor-league ball in small, remote towns where racial segregation remained a fact of life well into the 1960s.

The documentary features original, revealing interviews with James “Mudcat” Grant, Grover “Deacon” Jones, Jimmy Wynn, J.R. Richard, Tony Pérez and Orlando Cepeda. These former MLB stars endured challenges linked to racism on and off the field to pursue their big-league dreams – and in doing so, played a significant (and, until now, underappreciated) role in making America’s pastime truly open to all.

Smart n’ Up Miami Returns for Part 2!!!

We’ve added a new component for parents and adults

Screening & Panel Discussion of the Documentary Elementary Genocide with award winning film director Raheim Shabazz!

You DON’T want to miss this!

The purpose of the Black Male Summit is to expose Black males to critical information presented in a way that INSPIRES them to make better choices in the future. We inspire them to see past mistakes as stepping stones that were once stumbling blocks. In all adversity, there is always opportunity. More importantly, we expose them to resources that give them the opportunity to take advantage of what they have learned onsite.

According to statistics, one in every three Black males will see prison in their lifetime if current incarceration trends do not change. If properly inspired, instructed and redirected young Black men and boys can escape this dreaded fate. We address those issues in a way TAILOR MADE to penetrate the soul and awaken the consciousness of inner-city males.

Continental Breakfast, Lunch & Refreshments Will Be Provided

The first 30 people who Register AND Attend will receive special gift and will be entered in a drawing to have opportunity to meet and greet with artists performing at the 2017 Overtown Music & Arts Festival!

Elementary Genocide Film Screening & Panel Discussion..”From Primary to Pen… @ Black Archives Historic Lyric Theater
Jul 14 @ 10:00 pm – 3:00 pm

We have an EPIDEMIC!!!!! It plagues our schools. It pushes our most vulnerable students into the juvenile and criminal justice systems. Statistics reflect that these policies disproportionately target students of color and those with a history of abuse, neglect, poverty or learning disabilities.” Let’s start with the fact that states predict how many prison beds they need to create based on third grade reading scores. The percentage of third graders who are not proficient in reading by third grade predicts how many of that cohort will spend time in prison.

Elementary Genocide is a documentary executive produced by award winning journalist/filmmaker Rahiem Shabazz. The documentary appeals to a wide general viewership by addressing the social, cultural, political and personal ramifications of how the federal government allots money to each state, to build prions based on the failure rate of elementary children. In America, where half of the 4th grade is reading below grade level and more African-American males are in jail than are in college, Elementary Genocide serves as a striking reminder of a flawed system in need of repair.

Elementary Genocide consists of candid interviews and voice-over narration culled from original interviews from professors, teachers, bestselling authors, children, parents, celebrities, etc. A few notable appearances are made by Dr. Umar Abdullah Johnson, Dr. Boyce Watkins, Supreme Understanding, Dr. Torrence Stephens, Tracey Syphax, Killer Mike,Kadidra Stewart, Edward M. Garnes Jr., Okorie Johnson Sistah Iminah etc.

FREE for Parents, Grandparents, Educators, Counselors, and adults 18 and older WITH RSVP

“The School To Prison Pipeline is a system that built a highway into prison, but barely a sidewalk out”. – Rahiem Shabazz
